Welcome to Module 1-2

Kia ora and welcome to the first week of Introduction to Human Development. At the beginning of each week of this course, a new module will open for you on CANVAS.

From Weeks 2 to 9, we will explore the different stages of the human life span, from prenatal growth and infancy right through to late adulthood. At each stage, you will learn about various aspects of physical, cognitive [related to thought and thinking], social, emotional and cultural development. You will be encouraged to share and reflect upon your own lived experiences of growth and development on the discussion boards.

From Week 10, our attention will shift towards a deeper understanding of Western and indigenous developmental theories and models. You will be given an opportunity to integrate your growing self-awareness with your increasing theoretical knowledge.

This week we look at the Johari Window (Luft & Ingham, 1962) - a model of self-awareness and a tool to introduce yourself to your classmates. We also explore the growth-oriented Hierarchy of Needs model of human motivation (Maslow, 1943), which informs the approach to counselling taught on the Bachelor of Applied Counselling course. Click on the 'Next' button at the bottom right of this page to continue through the module.

Enjoy!
